The Benefits and Limitations of a Facebook Page for your Business

Every business or organization should have a Facebook page. It’s an awesome way to connect with local customers and grow your brand awareness online. After all, it’s free, easy to use and can be very effective. However, it should not be the only thing businesses use to expand their online presence.

Benefits of a Business Facebook Page

If you’re reading this, you’re probably at least somewhat aware of the benefits that a Facebook page can provide for your business. Major benefits include:

  • It’s free!
  • Easy-to-use interface
  • There are many, many Facebook users, so it has excellent reach potential
Facebook is a powerful tool to connect you with potential customers. It’s important for every business, church, club and civic agency to have one. However, there are some major drawbacks to solely relying on your Facebook page to represent your business online. It’s only one piece of a comprehensive online strategy.

Limitations of a Business Facebook Page

It is important to remember that Facebook controls your business page. Since it is on their domain and platform, they can remove it or change it at any time. If they were to do so, you may not get it back. It’s completely in Facebook’s hands and they have all the power.

Another issue is that Facebook requires users to log-in before viewing much of the information on business pages. While many of your potential customers are likely Facebook members, there are many who are not. And even those who are Facebook users may not want to sign into Facebook just to see one business page. They are likely to instead move on to a business with a website so they can get the info they need without signing into Facebook (I know I’ve done that!).

So, if you don’t have a website for customers to visit instead of your Facebook page, you’re losing out on business.

Another consideration is the credibility and professionalism that a well-made website conveys. If your business is only using a free social media page to represent yourselves to the world, it looks somewhat amateurish. Potential customers may doubt your competence or legitimacy.

It’s worthwhile to invest a little time and money into making a nice website for your customers. Not only will it make your business accessible to a wider audience, it will help build your brand authority in the eyes of consumers.

Benefits of your Own Website

Having your own website in addition to your Facebook business page is a great way to expand your online presence, brand, and customer base. The major benefits are:

  • Ownership: Owning your own domain gives you a great deal of freedom in how you configure, design and promote your website. You decide who hosts your site and can change it at any time.
  • Control: Your content is completely up to you. No one can edit your posts or take down your page if they don’t like what you say. If a host rejects you for some reason (this is rare), you can always choose another one or host it yourself. You’re in control.
  • Meeting Customers’ Expectations: Many consumers expect businesses to have their own website these days, and will judge a business based on the quality of their site. Don’t lose out on customers because of an undeserved negative impression.

A business Facebook page is a big part of growing your business and attracting leads online. By all means, your business should have a business Facebook page – but it shouldn’t be the only thing you use.

Your own website will give you ownership of your domain, content and strategy. You’ll have total control of the design, messaging and user experience of your own website, allowing you to attract the right customers for your business. A domain with your business name gives you additional authority and credibility in the eyes of consumers, and will make your business look more legitimate to them.
